The challenge of providing training for board members on any topic, let alone on the complicated topic of data, is finding the right resources to meet your style and needs. All of the training is designed with this focus: Boards must understand the need for and use of data in the context of their unique role. First, boards must have a vision and district wide goals for student achievement; secondly, they must be structured to focus on those goals; third and after data collection and analysis with the support of their superintendents, to use the interpretation as it relates to their goals in advocating for moral and fiscal support throughout their community. Central to the entire process is the need for good working Board policy. The PowerPoint presentation was designed specifically, with the accompanying training module and video, to pull down and use as a workshop. The agenda is targeted at a four-hour session but can be condensed as you see fit or expanded to easily provide 6-8 hours of training. It all depends on the context and sophistication of the board. Finally, send us your work as it evolves. You may have great monitoring data to share with other boardsor great policies that provide leadership to districts focused on student achievement.
